The 2012 Tet Festival, Year of the Dragon was organized by The Union of Vietnamese Student Associations (UVSA) of Southern California at Bolsa Grande High School in Garden Grove, CA. Now in its 31st year, it attracted an estimated 25,000 participants who came to celebrate this most important festival of the Lunar New Year in the Vietnamese community.
Organized in the spirit of a Spring Festival the event offered many activities associated with Tet: a dragon dance, display of a huge Heritage Flag, a procession of the 100 original Vietnamese half of whom followed the Immortal Fairy Âu Cơ to the hills and half followed their father Dragon King to the seas, a ceremony in honor of the ancestral manes of the Vietnamese people followed by a village procession involving young and old men and women. Also, traditional songs and music, games played at Tet such as Bầu Cua Cá Cọp, Oriental Chess, and many other activities seen at Tet time such as fortune telling. Calligraphy, Tet special editions of newspaper, Tet cards and food galore with Tet specialties like preserved fruits (mứt), nice cakes (bánh chưng, bánh tét) were available for the participants to partake of.
